“DEVELOPING A RESEARCH TEMPERAMENT”

The faculty and M.Sc.(N) students of JSS college of Nursing organized the State level Workshop on Developing a research temperament on 11th and 12th of December 2012 for PG students of Nursing, Physiotherapy, Ayurveda, Speech and hearing, faculty of Colleges of Nursing
The purpose of the workshop was to enable the researchers to acquire knowledge to appreciate the use and selection of qualitative and quantitative research design. Identify an appropriate sampling technique, compute the appropriate statistics for analysis of data, appreciate and implement the same in the nursing research, nursing education and nursing practice.
A total of 110 delegates from various colleges of Karnataka participated in the workshop. The colleges participated were post-graduate and under -graduate students and teachers of the following colleges:
The workshop began with the registration at 8.30 am .Pretest was conducted between 9.00 am -9.15am followed by Ice breaking session where 64 delegates introduced themselves and they were divided into 10 groups.
The first session started at 9.50 am by Dr. Erna Judith Roach, on What, why and how – Quantitative research design. The inaugural ceremony held at 11.am which was inaugurated by Chief guest Dr. S.M. Malegowda (District Health and family welfare officer Mysore.) Dr. H.Basavana Gowda, Principal JSS Medical college Mysore, Dr. Chellarani Vijaykumar and Dr, Raghukumar were the Guest of honour. Prof. Sheela Williams Principal, JSS College of Nursing, Mysore presided over the ceremony.
The keynote address was given by Mrs. Janet Mathias at 11.20am. Dr. S.M. Malegowda (District Health and family welfare officer Mysore) addressed the delegates around 11.30 am. Following it was Dr. H.Basavana Gowda, principal JSS Medical College, Mysore sharing his views on research. Dr. Chellarani Vijaykumar also expressed her views regarding research temperament.
The next session began with qualitative research design by Dr.Chellarani vijayakumar, Ex-Dean college of nursing CMC Vellore at 11.50 am. Other sessions were sampling, picking out the best by Dr.Lancy D’Souza professor in Psychology, Maharaja Degree College Mysore at 1.50 pm. The last session was on conceptual framework – Drawing out the blue-print by Dr. Juliana Linnette D’Sa Yenepoya University and research center, Mangalore at 3.30pm. There was a break in between the last session for tea and snacks at 4pm. The session was continued after 10 min. The first day of workshop ended at 5. 20 pm.
The second day of the workshop began with the review of the first day session by Ms. Amal Mathew, M.Sc. Nursing Student, JSS College of Nursing, Mysore.
The first session of the day was data analysis and presentation computation made easy by Mrs. Sucharitha Suresh, Statistician Father Muller’s College of Nursing Mysore. After that a session was conducted on Issues in Nursing Research Methodology by Dr. Asha Sharma, Vice President INC New Delhi at 11 am. The activity session by Mrs. Sucharitha Suresh was continued at 12.00pm. Lunch break was at 1.30 pm. Followed by activity session from 2pm to 4 pm.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory ceremony, which gave the opportunity to the participants to express their open views regarding the workshop. They expressed tat more such workshops should be conducted for benefit of the student population. Participants were happy and satisfied with the content and conduction of the workshop. The report of the workshop was read by Mrs. Bhavya, Organizing secretary. The certificates were distributed by the Chief Guest, Dr. Chellarani Vijayakumar Ex- Dean College OF Nursing CMC Vellore .The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Keerthi Rao I year M.Sc. Nursing and the program me ended with National Anthem by 6pm.
